When will the Chitwan National Park Jeep Safari reopen?

The Chitwan National Park is set to reopen on Friday, October 9, 2026. The repair work on damaged routes is ongoing, and the safaris will start once the routes are suitable for safari vehicles.

October 9 is just a planned date and should not be treated as the final date, as the repair work might be delayed due to unexpected complications. Travellers should confirm the latest published opening date before their visit, which, as of today, is October 9.

Why was the reopening date delayed?

The reopening of Jeep safari activities was expected to take place earlier, at the beginning of the Nepali month of Ashoj. But due to heavy monsoon rain, the rivers and streams inside the national park flooded, further damaging the routes and making them unsafe for vehicles.

The park officials will check and clear the repaired routes before reopening them, ensuring the safety of the visitors. The safety of the visitors is the priority.

Why Was the Jeep Safari in the Chitwan National Park Suspended?

The annual closure of the Chitwan National Park jeep safari during the monsoon is due to unsafe safari conditions caused by monsoon rain.

Monsoon rains damage the safari routes.

The safari roads of Chitwan are unpaved forest tracks that get heavily damaged by the monsoon rain. The fallen trees also block the way, making the safari very unsafe.

So, the National Park always suspends safaris during the monsoon season. This year, safaris were suspended from July 1.

Wildlife Protection During Monsoon

According to officials from Chitwan National Park, the monsoon is an important breeding time for many species. So, halting safaris during this time reduces vehicle movement and reduces disturbance for breeding.

It should be noted that while the safari inside the Chitwan National Park is halted due to the monsoon, visitors can still take Jeep safaris in the buffer zone and the community forest.

How Did Monsoon Floods Delay the Chitwan Safari Reopening?

Flooding damaged internal safari routes.

The National Park was already closed due to the monsoon, but the August floods inflicted additional damage to the safari routes. So, the park officials have to repair, clean, and inspect the tracks before reopening them.

The flooding heavily affected the route towards Tiger Tops

The Tiger Tops area of the national park was heavily damaged due to flooding in Riu Khola. Workers have been repairing the tracks by laying gravel to prepare them for safari.

Fallen trees and vegetation also need to be cleared.

The overgrown vegetation and the fallen trees also need to be cleared to ensure the safety of the visitors during the safari. So, clearing fallen trees and overgrown vegetation is a must before reopening the safari.

What Can Travellers Expect After the Jeep Safari Resumes?
